What is an assessment?
A drug and alcohol assessment evaluates the potential effects that can occur due to the use of substances. Most drug and alcohol evaluations identify a few core areas associated with drug or alcohol use. The assessment will focus on the substances used, problems associated with substance use and recommendations based on those results. Some people experience effects on their mental health, physical health or social relationships. It will identify problems associated with these areas.
A full evaluation will take approximately 1-1.5 hours and will take place in person. For most assessments a drug screen is also recommended. The assessment will assist an individual in identifying areas for change and potential resources that one can obtain. Like all substance abuse and mental health services an assessment is confidential, unless you choose to release certain information. The results of the assessment will be completely transparent and the individual can decide what sorts of services or locations of services they would like to receive after the results are gathered.
An assessment can be conducted for an adolescent or adult. In most cases if there is an adolescent in need of a drug or alcohol use assessment, a parent or guardian will be present for the first portion of the assessment to identify areas that may be impacting home life. For adults, sometimes spouses or close friends can provide additional information that may be helpful, as other persons in one's life can identify additional areas of concern.
After the assessment is completed, results will be provided and services will be offered based on need. For instance, some people may need residential, outpatient or individual treatment. Such decisions are made based on the type of substances used, potential medical complications, social relationships or problems managing social functioning and overall difficulty in managing symptoms or urges to use.
Rule 25 format is primarily used.
